Changes in the turgor pressure of guard cells regulate the opening and closing of stomata. When guard cells gain water and become turgid, the stomatal pore generally opens. When they lose water and become flaccid, the pore closes. Stomata regulate gas exchange and transpiration and are especially important for photosynthesis and plant water balance.
